Every basement I’ve had the pleasure of working on has presented its fair share of buried treasure. The latest 80 year old NDG abode didn’t kill my winning streak. Although I would hardly call finding the skeleton of a dead cat in a 100+ year old plateau house a win, but that’s another story. A story which gleefully entails my partner at time screaming like a little girl when he pulled the carcass from the crawlspace. Good times, sad times.
So back to my current finds. I present one perfectly stamped (with date no less) piece of Nakora “weldwood” finishing plywood. Manufactured by Ikeuchi and turned into a god awful set of built-ins. They really should have built this instead. Since it states quite clearly, “To give the night stand a “youngish” appearance, Nakora plywood—which is similar to ash—would be an excellent and inexpensive choice.”

- date stamped May 22 - 1956
And my second find that very same day (besides the active Knob and Tube wiring) was the semi crushed Player’s Tobacco cigarette package. Cork tipped…who knew?

Full sized images found at my new google gallery here. Enjoy. (Oh I forgot to mention that under the carpet and vinyl tiles and 1/4 plywood subfloor…I found a serviceable Hardwood floor. Nice.
