Some interesting Montreal stats from 2006…

Average commute: 8,1 km (8,0km - 2001)

Those that commute less than 5 km: 28,8%
5 - 10 km 21,1%
10 - 15 km 13,8%
15 - 20 km 8,8%
20 - 25 km 5,7%
25 - 30 km 3,1%
30 km + 4,3%
Mode of transport:

Car, Truck, SUV: 65,4% (Abbotsford,BC = 93.2%!!)
Car, Truck, SUV as passenger: 5,0%
Public Transport: 21,4%
Walking: 5,7%
Bike: 1,6%
Other: 0,8%

- apparently these numbers make us the Greenest city in Canada. Ouch.

As long as they continue making parking in the core more difficult, and continue upgrading the bike paths, things will hopefully get better.
The problem is that the city has given up cleaning the new bike path. Also, unfortunately, the metro is jammed packed at rush hour, which may begin to turn people off. I don’t see, however, how they can remedy that, unless they adopt the Tokyo method of having men in white gloves start shoving people onto cars.
