Speaking of green reno, here’s a great little post with some pertinent comments comparing the carbon foot print of renovating an existing home versus building a completely new one.

Obviously there are numerous variables they didn’t take into account, like the quality and commitment of the renovator, the choice of materials and technology as well as the drive to reduce waste sent to landfill. Kinda of tough comparison to make on the face of it, as most new construction takes place in the burbs. No doubt that it would be a large project to tear into an existing structure and turn it into a green gem, but if the structure and foundation are solid it’s very doable. It would take careful planning and a great design but the results could be spectacular, with the added bonus of NOT living in the suburbs.
