polystyrene #6

March 29th, 2008 by Bryan

When was the last time you pulled up to the food court line and they ladled a heap of rice and potatoes into your polystyrene plate or container then turned around and tossed it into the microwave for a 30 second blast. I’ve done it many a time with only a simmering thought of ‘is that kosher’? But those thoughts soon faded as Mr Boustan or whomever handed me a plate of delicious goodness.

Just to let you all know, placing polystyrene (or Styrofoam) in a microwave is NOT GOOD. Really, try and avoid take out from these places, or just order something in a wrap instead of the plate… better yet, eat at Basha’s where they use real plates!!

Here’s why. (according to Dart Polystyrene company)

There are plenty of stories surrounding microwaves, and some have attained “urban legend” status – “everyone” knows they’re true, even though there is no proof. Once the science behind microwaves is understood, it is clear that proper use of polystyrene plastic cups or containers is fine, as long as they are not overheated.

This, from the manufacturer of single-use (non-recyclable) polystyrene containers. If this is the summary of their defense, you know something is not quite right. Define ‘overheated’ please.

Personally I don’t microwave anything in a plastic container on the home front anymore, we use Pyrex or some other form of glass. And I guess now I’ll be on the lookout for places that hold off on the polystyrene too… hmm I wonder if I could bring my own plate and still get served a delicious “Creation” platter at Boustan?

I don’t even put microwavable Rubbermaid plastics in the nuker. Plastic micro-particles can detach with sauces and what not and end up in your food. And you will eat it.
