montreal’s 100km food supply

April 16th, 2008 by Bryan

Draw a giant circle around Montreal with a radius of 100km. Then find all the organic farms that fit snugly within that border. Now support those farms.

Here’s a few to start:

44.1km - Ile Perot, Qc - Windmill Point Farm
Offering a gamut of fruits and veggies (oooh organic potatoes)

100km - Waterloo, Qc - Gereli Farm
Offering Organic Beef, Lamb, Veal and Maple Syrup.

I’ll be making a purchase from Richard at Gereli Farm this spring/summer, so anyone else (besides the Tinman) that may be interested, let me know.

Feel free to add to the farm list in the comments. I’ll make an end of month post on everything we all find. Thanks.

PS: Isn’t it odd that google maps places the ‘center’ of Montreal at the intersection of Berri and the 720?

UDATE:  I’ve added a page just for Local Food.  Look up at the buttons above.   Please feel free to comment on that page with other additions/alterations to the list.  Thanks!

There’s Ferme La Crépescule for chicken: http://www.fermelecrepuscule.com/Accueil.aspx
Boucherie Valens in Huntington.: http://www.boucherievalens.com/index-eng.html (horrible website),
and of course you can always become a member of the Equiterre CSA: http://www.equiterre.org/

    Thanks for posting this Bryan.

Last year I was trying to search on the web to find farms that sell to the public, and it was, um, challenging. I really expected there to be some organization, blog or website set up to list these kinds of things. I found some listings, but the info was often incomplete.

Hopefully some other recommendations will come in through comments.
