old port disgrace

April 28th, 2008 by Bryan

While still on the spring (summer?) cleanup of Montreal take a look at these two pix below.

Old Port Montreal Overflowing Garbage

Old Port Montreal Overflowing Garbage2

Taken Sunday at the old port on the wide pedestrian walkway off de la Commune, filled with tourists and locals alike.  Eating, drinking and generally enjoying the spectacular sun filled day at the old port.

Two things are glaringly obvious from the pictures:

  1. People want to place their trash in a garbage
  2. The city is not providing an essential service

What’s more, likely 50% of the material in and around these tiny cans could and should be recycled.  There are no facilities in the area for that as well.  This situation obviously spans way past an initial winter cleanup.  If this situation is not remedied, these scenes will await you every single beautiful weekend throughout the summer months.  Causing not only a blight on the promenade but as the detritus spreads with the wind it will all end up somewhere; the river, the bushes, the sewers etc.

Marcel Tremblay, here is what you need to do:

  • Have your ‘employees’ note overflowing locations
  • Install recycling centers at these locations
  • Install slightly larger lidded garbage containers
  • Keep monitoring the situation and ADAPT as required!

Here, here, on installing recycling centers in the high traffic garbage locations. As much as people love to hate Toronto, this is one thing they do right. Most garbage cans downtown / in high traffic locations have 3 compartments - 2 for recycling and one for garbage.
