the economics of organic milk

July 8th, 2008 No Comments

Here’s a quick read on what farmer’s go through during a transitional period, switching from industrial dairy farming to organic dairy farming.
Organic milk demand is growing by an estimated 25 per cent a year, according to industry studies.
Fisher studied eight farms that switched from conventional to organic farming in recent years, detailing production levels, revenues […]

you are all beaches

July 7th, 2008 No Comments

-Jean-Sebastien Peron - SEPAQ
I’m not a beach fan, but the little guy loves the sand…what’s a father to do?  Here are a few local beaches to visit.  I have to admit, Oka beach intrigues me and it has nothing to do with the possibility of seeing nudists in ‘action’.   Sucks that we live on an […]

local locksmith

July 2nd, 2008 2 Comments

This is what happens to blurry jpgs when you hit Sharpen 6 times.  Can you read it now?  No?
Well here are the details on my ‘go to’ locksmith.
A. Boudreau (Serrurier) … 514-932-1801  …  2685 rue Notre Dame (Corner Atwater)
I’ve been burned once too often trying to get a Home Depot intern to make me a […]

street water

July 2nd, 2008 1 Comment

After the absurd use of water tankers dumping millions of litres (of potable water?) onto our parched asphalt as a form of cleansing, this pales in comparison.  Yet it still requires a look.
Poorly designed, poorly placed, poorly timed.  Just poor.   Or better yet…pour.

-30C and windy, these plants were probably still thirsty after today’s wastage.

Limited […]

Westmount needs a graffiti enema.

I love that sometimes I don’t need to wander far for a quick story…  here’s one.  Megafun productions across the way was having graffiti removed this morning.  Yes on June 24th.  Amazing.  Oh and the garbage crew did a run as well, trying to fool half the population who would have […]

May into june

June 20th, 2008 4 Comments

Quick update on May’s monthly fix:
Anti Publisac stickers now present on 95% of the households on this block.  We currently have about 40 stickers in hand and will be working our way around the corners day to day.  With only two holdouts on the street with the, “I like to look through the circulars” excuse, […]

cool contract

June 12th, 2008 4 Comments

How do you paint a building the size of Imperial Lofts phase 2?  Well, like this of course.

Wait for the sunny days, fill your lift with buckets of paint and some rollers… and start painting.  One guy, one standard roller, one coat.  No primer.  I’ll update this post if they drop a second coat on […]

yet another green grocer

June 12th, 2008 No Comments

Here’s an oldie (15 yrs as a coop and still running) but still a goodie, the Frigo Vert. Bonus if you’re a student at ConU, seeing as it’s right across the street from the GW campus on Mackay. Small, mostly clean with all the usual suspects inside. Check it out if you’re […]

tram tram

June 12th, 2008 2 Comments

With all this talk about new tramways running around town, I was wondering what all that infrastructure would cost (some say 44Million/km, some say 80).
On my end I think it’s a complete waste of money to build:

the tracks
the nasty power lines
the special track clearing machines for snow and ice
the service depots for trams
the ’stations’
and ummm […]

if only they didn’t exist

June 9th, 2008 No Comments

Bugs that bite.  Can’t stand them.  I’m pretty sure they reside at the very top of the food chain.

- Larvae of Culex Mosquitoes (wikipedia common license)
When DEET (being a four letter word and all)  is a non option for a baby, where do you turn?  Citronella?  Crap.  Doesn’t really work well, and you need to […]

unmetered waste

June 8th, 2008 No Comments

Water.  Buzzword of the next century.  Oil is so passé.
Watching a client drain (mostly) and  then refill his swimming pool with a an unmetered water supply strikes me as the very heart (or at least the kidneys) of our wasteful ways.  No consideration goes into the costs of flushing tens of thousands of litres down […]

time to draw the line

June 1st, 2008 No Comments

May 26th 2008…  a crew of four unionized City of Montreal workers arrive to finally repaint our intersection (and every other one in the borough).

These stop lines and cross walks will not be visible past the end of September.

This puts residents, often with babies, children and dogs in tow at a serious risk for 7 […]
